Teacher Salary Survey 2007

Maryland ranked Eighth in the nation for its average teacher salary in 2006-07, according to the American Federation of Teachers’ (AFT) Survey and Analysis of Teacher Salary Trends 2007.

The average teacher salary in Maryland for the 2006-07 school year was $56,927-a 4.8 percent increase from the previous year. Maryland was ranked fourth in the nation for beginning teacher salaries, at $40,849, an increase of 5.7 percent from 2005-06.

In Maryland, the average salary for charter school teachers was $50,892; beginning charter school teachers' salaries averaged $40,676.

Traditional public school teacher salaries for other states in the Mid-Atlantic Region ranked as follows: New Jersey was ranked third in the nation, at $59,730; New York was fourth, at $59,557; Pennsylvania was 10th, at $54,977; and Delaware was 12th, at $54,537.

California had the highest average teacher salary, at $63,640, while South Dakota reported the lowest, at $35,378.
