Teacher Salary Survey 2007

New Mexico ranked 40th in the nation for its average teacher salary in 2006-07, according to the American Federation of Teachers’ (AFT) Survey and Analysis 0f Teacher Salary Trends 2007.

The average teacher salary in New Mexico for the 2006-07 school year was $42,780—a 2.7 percent increase from the previous year. New Mexico was ranked 27th in the nation for beginning teacher salaries, at $32,081, an increase of 2.4 percent from 2005-06.

In New Mexico, the average salary for charter school teachers was $38,622; beginning charter school teachers’ salaries averaged $32,411.

Traditional public school teacher salaries for other states in the Southwest Region ranked as follows: Texas was ranked 29th in the nation, at $45,392; Arizona was 31st, at $44,700; and Oklahoma was 41st, at $42,379.

California had the highest average teacher salary, at $63,640, while South Dakota reported the lowest, at $35,378.
